Today’s Mass: Anthropologists remind us that marginality is a very powerful force in every culture. Those who live at the margins of our care and concern stand, in their poverty and isolation, as a living condemnation of us--and their presence can embolden us to live as we ought. Sadly, too often we can easily choose to ignore them. And, in doing so, we put ourselves at odds with the core of both the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. Mosaic law (Exodus) receives its final redaction in Jesus' insistence that our love of God is demonstrated in our loving care for our neighbour (Matthew). Nothing could be clearer.
